Swiss National Day

The street lamps on the main street in Villigen have been decorated for Swiss National Day.

Back in 1291 (no, not a typo) "three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation" on August 1, and this is considered to be the birth of Switzerland. It was only in 1993 that the day was legally established as a paid holiday.

Ten francs or yellow

As the first of the month, today is the City Daily Photo theme day and while I didn't sign up for it, I wanted to acknowledge it anyway. Please visit the community webpage to see what the participants have put up. Click here.

Pictured above is the ten Swiss franc note (CHF 10) featuring the architect Le Corbusier (an old post mentioning him is here). This side of the note is labelled in French and Italian. German and Rumantsch appear on the reverse side.

Astronomia

The present form of the Lateinschule (grammar/primary school) building dates back to 1638 and it has a beautifully frescoed east facade. Rudolf Schwerter from Baden did the facade in 1640 in Grisaille (Wiki on Grisaille). In 1885 it was redone in the brown-red tones seen here. The last renovation was in 1930 by Otto Kälin. (Source: Brugg 1984 - Anlass der Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten 700 Jahre Stadtrecht Brugg).

City daily photo theme day: Spheres/Circles. Alas, once again I failed to sign up for the Daily Photo Blog theme day. But, to my pleasant surprise I realized that my planned post actually fits it with the topic, with the celestial sphere held aloft by Astronomia here.

City daily photo theme day: Sister cities

The first of the month again and it's theme day for the daily city photo blogging community. Sister cities is on the menu today.

The closest town to Villigen is Brugg and Rottweil (Wiki) in Germany is its Partnerstadt. I didn't make it over there, nor did I succeed in photographing a Rottweiler dog (Wiki.) So we must make do with this seal of Rottweil pounded into the wall of the Schwarzer Turm (see photo in this old post here) in Brugg in 1988 to commemorate 75 years of partnership.

Update: See more of the seal here.

City daily photo theme day: Metal

The first of the month is theme day for the daily city photo blogging community and this August the topic is metal. As August 1st happens to be the Swiss national day, I wanted to combine the two.

Helvetia is the Roman name for the region of Europe between the Alps and the Jura. She personifies Switzerland, as seen on these coins. The Swiss confederation, Confœderatio Helvetica, was formed on August 1, 1291. For those of you who might have puzzled over it, that's the reason CH is the country abbreviation for Switzerland (source: Wikipedia). Incidentally, the typeface Helvetica? Developed at a Swiss type foundry in 1957 by designer Max Miedinger.

No horses

Seen at the entrance to a path down to neighboring Stilli. Today, is theme day for the CDP community. Please visit the portal to find out what members all over the world have selected to show as forbidden activities in their areas.

Some of my visitors were tickled by an earlier post showing a 'no tank on bridge' sign. If you missed it, you can see it by clicking here.

Mortal danger
Do not touch the cables.
Seen on an electricity pole near the center of the village. Most of the lines are buried underground and this is one of the few last remaining (not for long though) overground ones.

As the first of the month, today is once again theme day for the city daily photo blogger community. Numbers is the topic this time. Do visit the group portal (link) to see what members all over the world are showing.

Daily photo theme day: Bridges

Villigen has a lot of water in the direct vicinity in the form of the river Aare, as well as many mountain (hill?) springs. There are a few proper bridges (click on the bridge label below if you're interested) I've written about, but today I want to highlight this little private footbridge. I took the photo from another little bridge, one just large enough for cars.

The first of the month is theme day for the daily city photo blogging community and this December the topic is bridges. Due to some *ahem* technical problems, I was unable to register with the community this time, but please visit Gerald England's Hyde Daily Photo page to check out the other bloggers who are participating today.

Up on Besserstein

Besserstein is the hill that overlooks Villigen and affords a great view of the surrounding area. I've posted several photos from up there, click on the besserstein label below to see them and other related posts.

It is thought that there was a hideaway at the top in the late-prehistoric times. It is also thought that there was a watchtower built by the Romans, however no actual ruins have been found. What does exist is a pile of rocks as seen here, and a few WWII era bunkers.

Today is Theme Day, the monthly community project of the City Daily Photo group. The theme for October is cemetery and since Villigen doesn't have one, I've decided not to participate but I wanted to allude to the theme. To look through the posts from the rest of the community, visit the Daily City Photo Blog portal.

Daily Photo theme day: Street signs

It's the first of the month and time again for the Daily City Photo Theme Day! Street signs and/or street lights are on offer this month. Photographed here is a Wegweiser in Villigen, a signpost showing directions and distances to places for hikers. The distances are actually given in time, as they're supposed to account for changes in terrain (50 km uphill vs 50 km on level ground, that sort of thing). Let's just say it usually takes me a little longer than advertised, and let's blame it on the obsessive photo taking.

Note the lowest marker which says Schweizer Familie Feuerstelle. That's a designated public place for picnics, stocked with firewood and an area to build a fire for grilling. Some of them are even kitted out with picnic tables and benches. For a searchable list by Canton, click here (might be useful for readers in Switzerland). Schweizer Familie is a Swiss magazine and they appear to sponsor these sites.

Back in February, I had posted a photo of the largest example of these that I've come across.

More than 100 daily city bloggers are participating in today's theme day:

Daily photo theme day: breakfast

Updated to the most current list with permalinks generated by Gerald in Hyde (see below). Thank you Gerald!

A dual-purpose post as we're celebrating Swiss National Day today. Birchermüesli (Wikipedia) or just muesli is probably familiar to many people. Dr. Bircher-Brenner the inventor of Birchermüesli was born in Aarau (the capital of my canton, Aargau) in 1867 and and in 1904 he established a sanatorium in Zürich. The original recipe from around 1900 consisted of apples, rolled oats, sweetened condensed milk and lemon juice. Fresh milk wasn't used back then because of concerns of bovine TB and the like. Nowadays, yogurt is often used though what I have here is made with cream which is what I prefer.

The bread is called Weggen or Weggli and this one pictured here is a special edition for 1st August which explains the little Swiss flag. The Edelweiss is from a potted plant.

To my Swiss readers: If you're attending one of the August 1st brunches (www.brunch.ch) and have a blog post or photo about it you would like to share, please leave a comment.

Daily photo theme day: Red

Geraniums, especially red ones, are very popular in window boxes in Switzerland. You might be familiar with photos of the dark brown mountain chalets with copious red blooms in the windows (links to photos at other sites: 1, 2, 3). This particular window box belongs to a house on Hauptstrasse. Over the course of the week, I think I'll show you other windows.

This month, nearly a hundred DPers are participating in the theme. See red all over the world:

Theme day: Views from my room

It's theme day, and the theme for June is "the view from my room". Instead of just one view, I wanted to give you an idea of what you would see if you were to stand at the window and spend some time looking around. Clicking on the image will bring up a 1500 pixel x 1125 pixel version. You will see the garden with water features that the downstairs neighbors set up, a cat ladder (neighbors'), two cats (ours), the balcony and window belonging to another neighbor and herb plants on our balcony. There are also a couple of shots of the window from the bed. All photos were taken over the past two days.

Addendum: I changed the layout of the collage just a tiny bit as there was something that was bothering me. Also, for those of you who were interested in the post from yesterday: all the individuals who were up for approval for citizenship were accepted.

Surely, you want to take a look at the view from the rooms of the DPers all over the world:

Daily Photo theme day: city exchange

The theme this month is "City Exchange". There is some disagreement in the community as to what this means. Some are of the opinion that it should be a local photo that makes the visitor think that they're at the wrong place. Others opine that it should be photo taken in a place other than "home". Since I regularly post photos from places other than Villigen, I thought it would be more interesting to go with the first group and post a photo from Villigen. I decided to do a B&W shot, to emphasize the feeling of disorientation. For the rest of the week, I might post photos from places around Switzerland other than Villigen.

I've shown other foreign sights around Villigen before. Here are links to them:

Daily Photo theme day: a public mailbox

This is the mailbox at the log house that I mentioned in the buggy post from some time ago. I'm guessing the owner either does woodworking as a profession, or a very serious hobby.

Daily Photo theme day: Men at work

Once a month (usually the first of the month), members of the daily city photo blog community participate in a theme day. Today's topic is "men at work" and while I had ideas of interesting interpretations of the theme, I wasn't able to capture any of them on CCD. So, here's a rather boring shot of construction work going on opposite our post office (note the marker with the name and the postcode on the right hand side of the photo). I don't know what it is that they're working on, so I can't tell you.
