Daily photo theme day: breakfast

Updated to the most current list with permalinks generated by Gerald in Hyde (see below). Thank you Gerald!

A dual-purpose post as we're celebrating Swiss National Day today. Birchermüesli (Wikipedia) or just muesli is probably familiar to many people. Dr. Bircher-Brenner the inventor of Birchermüesli was born in Aarau (the capital of my canton, Aargau) in 1867 and and in 1904 he established a sanatorium in Zürich. The original recipe from around 1900 consisted of apples, rolled oats, sweetened condensed milk and lemon juice. Fresh milk wasn't used back then because of concerns of bovine TB and the like. Nowadays, yogurt is often used though what I have here is made with cream which is what I prefer.

The bread is called Weggen or Weggli and this one pictured here is a special edition for 1st August which explains the little Swiss flag. The Edelweiss is from a potted plant.

To my Swiss readers: If you're attending one of the August 1st brunches (www.brunch.ch) and have a blog post or photo about it you would like to share, please leave a comment.

Hi Z, looks like a healthy breakfast!
I did post a little early since I am planning to get to bed before 11 p.m. I usually post last thing before lights out, since mornings are so busy that it may be noon before I get around to it!
Thanks for visiting me for theme day!

Z, Ditto what Lavenderlady has said about the outstanding beauty of your post! This was my husband's fave breakfast of late, only he ate it with soy milk. There is a brand of muesli here in the US called Red Mill that is really good.

Great photo, and tieing it in with your national day is fortunate too.
Birchermuesli is quite popular here too, especially with people who are a bit health conscious (though it can easily load on the kilojoules!)

it fits my idea of a good breakfast - savoury and fruity!

Happy National Day!

Just yesterday I was reading the Wikipedia about Switzerland. We were wondering what are the languages you speak there. You have 4 national languages, it is just like Singapore!

Interesting to find out the muesli is a swiss invention!

very healthy looking!

Creative way to combine the two subjects; and the berries on the muesli make the shot!

no theme today over here for breakfast. For me this morning it has been fuitjuice only one slice of wholemeal bread and butter a little bit and a teaspoon of my banana jam.

Thank you all for your comments! And please leave more if you're just visiting now -- can't have too many comments, I say. I'm working my way through the DPs, and hope to visit all of you very soon.

One thing I realized after I posted the photo is that the flag is wrong. The Swiss flag is square, not a rectangle, but if Swiss supermarkets can't get it right, what's a foreigner to do?! Should have made my own little drawing, I guess.

very tired this morning so not commenting more just now.

Very appealing interesting and TASTEFUL post. The cross on the flag makes it recognizable straight away even if the shape is incorrect, is nothing sacred!!

It's a nice close up composition this. Agrre with Don - looks like a food magazine cover. I notice you go for the midget birchermuesli (unless those are giant beeren) which seems to be the norm in cafes here. I usually have a skip-sized version at home, which rather spoils the healthy attributes

Richard: I bought this at the Migros take-away kiosk at the Migros in Brugg and must admit I don't know much about the müesli trends. This was the special "saison" version with the berries.

Just last month I learned from my Swiss friend how she prepares her muesli - and it was so easy. I'm doing it every weekend now. I also finally learned what CH stands for.

Here's to good muesli!!
