61. Red tram, blue tram

The alps in the distance over Lake Zurich.
The Quaibrücke with two trams on it.
Boats docked in the foreground.

It's a pity I didn't get a better exposure.

57. Fork in the river

Walking on a few more meters towards the Brugg side in yesterday's photo you would see this fork of the Aare.

56. The Aare and Brugg seen from the pedestrian bridge

Oof, look at all that grey.

There's a lovely prestressed concrete tension-band bridge over the Aare at Brugg for pedestrian traffic and I took this photo while I was crossing over it. The bridge seen here is the Casinobrücke.

The bridge I was on is the Aaresteg Mülimatt and I will have to go photograph it another day. More info about that one:

40. Border

If you ride the train from Waldshut in Germany to Koblenz in Switzerland, you'll cross over the border in/at the Rhine and see something like this.

Today there was a referendum/vote to decide whether Switzerland should change the treaty that it has had with the EU until now which allowed EU nationals free access to the Swiss labor market. The change would mean that the EU people would be treated as citizens of non-EU countries are treated.

As I write this, the results have just come in, and it shows the country split almost perfectly: 49.7% no to 50.3% yes. It's too early for me to find up-to-date analysis in English, but here's a piece from this morning:

Grossmünster at dusk

The distinctive twin towers of the Grossmünster church. The core of the building was built between 1100 and 1220. Wiki entry here about the role it played in the history of the Protestant Reformation.

Ladenlücke

In roughly the same spot as yesterday's photo, but panning over to the south a little bit. There's the river Limmat with the Zürichsee - lake Zürich - beyond.

If my information is correct, Ladenlücke is an outlet for things made by people in social welfare programs. The objects are made out of used materials. Bags made from car tires, vases made out of soda bottles, things like that.

The mill and the bridge

Retracing our steps a little in this post. The wooden bridge on the right is the one from which I had taken last year's photo (see yesterday's post).

The Aareinsel in Lauffohr

Part of the small island (Aareinsel) to the north of the bridge between Lauffohr and Vogelsang. Look at this map on Google to see what I mean: link. What's labelled as Lauffohrstrasse is the bridge (well, it's still the old bridge on the satellite images, the new bridge is longer and curved).

Some construction details about the bridge:
October 2007: date the old bridge was demolished and construction started on the replacement
Concrete: material of construction
225 m: length of the bridge
1 month: length of time the contruction was completed before schedule (!)
380 tons: amount of reinforced steel used (1 metric ton = 1000 kg = 2205 lbs)
520 tons: amount of pavement
2: number of columns in the water
(Source: www.azonline.ch)

I don't have any good photos of the bridge to show here. For some beautiful nighttime images of the thing, see these photos by Grendel here and here on Flickr.

The Kaserne in Brugg

The Casino Brücke (bridge) over the Aare in Brugg. The yellow building is - actually all the buildings are - part of the army barracks here. A view from over on that side appeared here last March (20080306 Newer bridge in Brugg).

The old bridge in Brugg I

A view through the railing of the old bridge over the river Aare in Brugg. For a better look at the scene in the background, go back earlier this year to the following post:

No tanks

There's an army training area in Brugg that's in the woods and next to the river Aare. Most of it appears to be open to the general public to hike around in. Notice the green Robidog garbage can for dog excrement at the far left corner of the bridge (old post about Robidogs here). The pretty building in the background is a restaurant.

There have been a handful of fatal army training related accidents in the last few years and a very recent one involving a boating exercise left four participants dead and one missing (swissinfo story here).

Little stone bridge

Another one from the Auenstein/Rupperswil area as yesterday. Could be the Aare or the Gislifluh..

These streams and eddies were what I was observing from the bridge yesterday.

Blackbird

I was on my way to the library and had stopped on the old bridge in Brugg to look at the churning waters of the Aare down below when this bird caught my ear with his exuberant song.

Does anyone know what tree that is? It seems to be perennial.

Aare

Just before the bad weather rolled in, I was able to capture this shot of some of the islands in the Aare beyond the newer Brugg bridge. This perspective is one that's difficult to get as there's no pedestrian walkway on this side of the bridge (the left side as seen in this previous post). I happened to be on the bus during a little bit of a traffic jam and voila!

The newer bridge in Brugg

The new bridge over the Aare in Brugg is where I stood to take this shot of the old bridge which is located to the right. Click the photo to see a 1920x1440 version. At the top of the image, a faint shadow of the snow-covered tall mountains is visible.

Daily photo theme day: Bridges

Villigen has a lot of water in the direct vicinity in the form of the river Aare, as well as many mountain (hill?) springs. There are a few proper bridges (click on the bridge label below if you're interested) I've written about, but today I want to highlight this little private footbridge. I took the photo from another little bridge, one just large enough for cars.

The first of the month is theme day for the daily city photo blogging community and this December the topic is bridges. Due to some *ahem* technical problems, I was unable to register with the community this time, but please visit Gerald England's Hyde Daily Photo page to check out the other bloggers who are participating today.

Mobility, and freedom

I've noted a handful of these types of vehicles on the roads around Villigen. The sign on the back indicates that the top speed is 30 km per hour (under 19 mph). I took this photo while on the Aarebrücke at Stilli that I've featured before.

The Classic electric scooter is made by a company called Kyburz AG in Canton Zürich. This vehicle has a range upto 65 km (40 miles) on one charge, and can negotiate a maximum grade of 30%. I was tickled to read in the extras that one can also get, as they put it, a fixation for the dog (Hundehalterung in German).

Last summer, after a few days of heavy rain, the scene looked like this.
