Train signage at the Zurich main station

About a year ago I complained about the fact that SBB was replacing all the split-flap displays in the train stations. I liked the split-flap displays.

In October 2015, the enormous one in the Zurich main station was replaced by this electronic version. I have to say that I find the replacement quite acceptable -- easy and nice to read, and extra messages (such as service disruptions, seen here) can be accommodated well.

On a side note, I'm going to try a weekly posting schedule. Let's see how that goes.

Hatter

Still in Zürich.

zur Schtund

Another shop sign in Zürich, near Bahnhofstrasse. Unfortunately I've forgotten exactly where.

BÜ's

Indulging my fascination with shop signs. BÜ's is a restaurant in Zürich, on Kuttelstrasse (direct translation: Tripe Street). The reviews of the place are very positive.

Baldegg in reverse

Baldegg ("a" as in alms, and the "gg" is a k) is an area in Baden, up on a hill. There's a restaurant there, with a nice view of the mountains (weather permitting). The script of this sign is based on an old document.

Link to the restaurant.

Yet another shoe store.

Many possibilities for this one: Wiki.

Hammer, pliers, crowned snake ... oh my!

Still looking for an explanation of this sign. I'll just have to go back to the shop and ask.

Update: Another reader, Wellingtonia, has found the answer (see the comments). The snake represents wisdom and the tools are those of the blacksmith (as reader Lewi suggested yesterday. This is the coat of arms of the blacksmith guild of Zürich (Wiki).

Pharmacy Shield of the blacksmith guild

In Zürich.

Update: As a reader pointed out, the hammer and the pliers probably don't belong in a pharmacy sign (though we all know about the very early days of medicine... yikes!) So, what can this be?

Update II: The area of Zürich where I took this series of photos is home to the trade guilds of Zürich. A little about them here (Wiki). This coat of arms is that of the blacksmith guild.

Druckerei

I'm a little low on new Villigen photos right now, so how about another series of shop signs? This one is in Zürich. Druckerei = printing press/shop.

Golden key

Another one I didn't get a label for. This concludes the series. Which one did you like best?

Golden deer

I didn't get any labels for this one. Hirschen (deer) for sure.

la Gatta

Gatta is surely Italian for cat. Veltliner Keller is a restaurant.

Rüden

Rüde = male dog. That's one dog I don't think would make a house-pet.

Zur blauen Gilge

What Gilge is, I have not been able to find. From the image I would guess a spear, or a spearhead.

Zum blauen Störchli

To the blue stork. Actually, the little blue stork. The diminutive form is très popular in Switzerland.

Many of you have already gathered that I'm rather partial to architectural details and shop signs. For the next few days, I'll be showing you some photos I took in Zürich when I met up with blogger Janet of DC Confidential.

P. S. I'm away from Villigen at the moment and the Blogger 'bot will be taking care of business in so far as I've scheduled posting.

zur Schmiede

This building next to die Apotheke from yesterday is home to a hardware shop. That's in keeping with its name: zur Schmiede (Schmied = blacksmith).
