58. Long vehicle

Loosely following my Friday language feature, today I give you a "Long vehicle" sign on a trolley bus in Zurich. Apparently, it's universally understood in the English form?

The ad for the BMW reads:
Don't (just) look. Test drive.

Following on from yesterday:
The entire train was decorated; this is a shot of the locomotive.

Ads that we like

An advertisement for the Zurich Kantonalbank on the S12 train (shot in Brugg). That's the Grossmünster depicted, along with a swan on the Zurich lake. Looks like a special for the new year celebrations, given the fireworks shown.

Chocolats Lindt

View out the back of the tram at Central in Zürich. I think Lindt has been advertising at this site for decades.

Robot mower, all dressed up

In the same patch as in yesterday's photo resides this Husqvarna Automower. This installation is also an advertisement, for a local seller of garden equipment (Mechanische Werkstatt).

Advertisting

Another piece of land going to be built up soon. Is it just me, or does the banner for the architects (the white thing on the right) remind you of the Google map pins?

Incidentally, many parts of the house across the street have been featured here over the years. This photo from the beginning of the month caught it in August 1 decorations, much of which have been removed.

Winter morning sunshine III

Most Christmas decorations started to go up on the 1st of December. The Christmas-y hens are advertising eggs for sale. The chicken abode is just across the street from the house. Related posts:

Kleiderbörse

Once in a while we have a community flea-market in the village. On the 20th of this month, there's one for winter clothing and toys in the Turnhalle in Stilli. Note to self: must get a photo of the Turnhalle. Here's a photo of this barrel from April 2007.

I'll have spotty access to the internet over the next ten days and while I have a button-pusher to publish for me, I may be a little delayed in responding to your comments.

Employment opportunity

Gute Reiterin gesucht = good equestrienne wanted.

Early autum and winter mornings around the area often feature a lot of fog which gradually burns off as the sun climbs higher in the sky.

The international scourge that is junk mail

Here's a photo of a local mailbox. The first sticker says "Please, no advertisements in this mailbox, thank you!" The second reads "No junk mail (I feel compelled to add please!) except for the latest Ikea catalog. The third sticker declares "Mail from Sweden? That's for me!" Ingvar Kamprad (who makes his domicile in CH) must be so happy! We have no such stickers on our box, mainly because I never remember to write such a note and carry it over when I fetch the mail.

I got the idea for this post from a blogger in Zürich who recently wrote about a piece of mail she received from the Swiss postal system asking her to reconsider her "no" stance.

From the region ...

Migros (meegro, the "s" is silent) is one of the two main grocery store chains in the country, and is the oldest and the largest. Aus der Region, fur die Region -- from the region, for the region -- is their slogan for locally grown produce and locally raised animals. Villigen's own agrobusiness Schwarz supplies salad greens (and reds, as seen here) to Migros. This sign says "we're producing for Migros".

Migros was started in 1925 in the Zürich region by Gottlieb Duttweiler. At first, there were no shops, just one Ford Model-T van driving around neighborhoods, selling just six basic items at very low prices. The business took off from there, with many set-backs along the way, to become the largest retailer in Switzerland. They even have recreational "schools" for adults, with classes that range from language instruction (I attended German lessons there for a time) to vegetarian cookery to oil painting to Microsoft certification. Another interesting aspect is that the supermarkets don't sell cigarettes or alcohol. To read more about Migros in English, you can try this Wikipedia article.

Bee on a swing

This weather bee is installed in front of a house near us. The owners sell honey but I've yet to try some -- must do something about that soon. The legend on the frame reads:
Biene trocken = schönes Wetter || Bee dry = nice weather
Biene nass = Regen || Bee wet = rain
Biene weiss = Schnee || Bee white = snow
Biene schaukelt = Windig || Bee swinging = windy
Biene am Boden = Erdbeben || Bee on the ground = earthquake
Biene verschwunden = Diebstahl?! || Bee missing = theft?!

For a look at the whole thing, there's my overflow site:
Swinging bee, the whole story

Für alle Batterien gibt es ...

A public service message about the proper disposal procedure for batteries on billboards around the area. The text says "There's a clean (or clear) solution for all batteries". The image made me do a double-take.

Public health ad campaign

Advertisements here can be very direct, such as this recent campaign by the Health Promotion Switzerland organization to encourage people to shed excess weight. This sign is on a shopping cart/trolley. The caption states that Switzerland is becoming fatter (dicker), but that it takes just a little to make a big change. For the other versions or to see the TV spot in Swiss-German (I can manage a rough translation if necessary), French or Italian, check out this page.
