Americana: Route 66

Perhaps not what you expected to see in Villigen? I don't know the why, when or who of this tribute to the 66th anniversary of US Route 66, but there it is, right on Hauptstrasse.

Oh wow, 1992... it was that long ago? I didn't learn of Route 66 until I watch the movie Cars on DVD...

It's even more interesting that this is found at a place far from the United States!

Hi Fay, nice to have you visit! Route 66 is legendary (I lived in the US for about 15 years, but the farthest west I lived was Indiana so just near the start of the highway). U2's Heartland 66 the highway speaks is probably the pop-culture item that I associate most with the road now.

I haven't seen Cars yet, I'll put it on the rental list (I just peeked at your website).

Heh, I live on 66, and yet I can't even remember if there was a celebration here (though I'm sure there must have been).

I'm always amazed by how those in other countries see Rt. 66 (and even some in this country), because to me it is just a beat up road!

Victoria: Nice to have your perspective here. I'll be sure to share your opinion if I ever find out who put up this poster. ;-)

I'm active in the preservation and promotion of Route 66 and have been for about ten years. I missed the big 66th anniversary in 1992, but was a proud speaker at the El Garces Harvey House in Needles, CA on the 75th anniversary. For the 80th anniversary, I was involved in helping present David and Mary Lou Knudson of the National Historic Route 66 Federation with a sort of Lifetime Achievement Award from their friends.

I live just off of Route 66 in Pasadena, CA. I am very proud of my association with the fabled highway, but am quick to point out that in America Route 66 is just one of several historically significant transportation corridors, including the Lincoln Highway and Yellowstone Trail, among others.

Thanks for the reminder that Route 66's friends and family spread far behind the borders of the highway. Wishing you and all of your readers happy (and safe!) travels down your respective highways.

z, I'd like to know what you think of Cars after you watch it! What helped me understand better the idea of the movie is the extra stuff on DVD, where the producer talked about the crew's trip on Route 66, which inspired what later has become the movie story.

Victoria, I guess Rt 66 is indeed a beat up road, but one with a lot of stories.
