Paper pick-up day in Baden

I've talked about paper pick-up in Villigen before (for recycling, see links below). We had our quarterly collection on the 16th. Last Saturday, I photographed a couple of the paper collectors in the nearby town of Baden.

By the way, I was asked to contribute (is there a nice sounding term similar to pro bono if the public good isn't necessarily involved?) to the Swiss edition of an online information service site for expats and I've decided to give it a go. My first piece is here: Altpapiersammlung: paper collection for recycling.

Go with "Pro Bono" since it is probably in the public good to realise how lucky you are when your paper is collected more regularly than 4 monthly...

Shaun: Your comment made me smile.

To set the record straight, I made a mistake in the Expatica text. It should be every 3 months (quarterly, right). A 25% percent difference is a big one, right?

But I don't get it. Do you city people collect more paper? Or is it because the homes are generally smaller and there's less space to store the paper? Or, it becomes too unmanageable for the collectors to deal with 3 months worth of accumulation?

I would say that is a difference although I am not sure a "big" one...

I have absoloutely no idea. It is probably something as simple as logistics to get it from place to place. I dont know if someone would have thought about it that in depth, particularly since yours is collected on the back of a tractor...:)

Here in Saarbrücken Germany we have a big blue container emptied monthly from the curb in front of the house. In Villigen it seems more like a communal, save-the-planet-together event.

Hi Z

It's collecting of carton.
For the recycling it's a difference.
The problem for people in citys they get mor advertising paper.

Wellingtonia: Click on the photo and look closely. It's mixed. In Villigen, they put the paper bundles at the bottom and then put the cardboard (of which there is usually less) on the top.

Is your cardboard collected separately from the paper in your town/village?

I remember, when I was a child (a long, long, long time ago) and in the "Pfadi", we collected paper and then got money which was used for "Pfingstlager". I prefered the years when the "Maienkäfer" came out heavily. Then I collected them and got also money. A few "Rappen" per kilo. But I could keep it for myself. And 50 Rappen, in 1951, was a lot of money.

Hi Z

Normally they will collect it separate.
The factory that will pick it up on the collecting place, have different containers for it.
So it's easier to collect it on different dates.
Mixed paper gives them less money.
