Höhenfeuer

As part of the Swiss National Day celebration on the 1st, the village organized a bonfire up on Besserstein, the hill behind us. I took this photo from our balcony at 12x zoom. For a daytime look at the area, see this old post from May on my overflow site (compare the flags in the two photos for orientation):

Update. Visit the link below to read here about the official events that took place yesterday and about the legend of the Rütli meadow, where the original pact for the Swiss confederation was supposed to have been made on August 1, 1291.

Are national days something the average citizen would celebrate? Here it’s all a big yawn. I’d rather celebrate that I live in an age of evolving international cooperation on all levels.

Fénix and Claude: Thank you for the nice notes.

Beetle: No Kamps Bakery here, only local shops and small chains.

Per: It seems that it's a new thing, to celebrate the national day with displays of the Swiss flag and symbols. It appears to be mostly a major fireworks opportunity for children! And international cooperation is and I think has always been an important issue for CH. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to get into any meaningful discussion about it at this stage.
