Interesting post. I like wood and all of its uses. We mistreat it all the time, and that is sad.
I wonder why 40% of the birds died in the winter. Was it a case of everything frozen and no water to drink or no food to eat? One of the two or both usually accounts of bird deaths in winter.
We use electric heated pet water bowls here in the winter to keep fresh water for the animals. And we spend a great deal of cash on one or two types of food. Sunflower chips and pieces without the hulls are eaten in winter by meat-eating birds. The other is raw shelled peanuts. Lots of larger animals will eat them and small birds can usually slowly eat pieces off of a peanut half and end up eating the whole piece.
I have lots of wood and would love to try something like this. How long does it take to carve do you think? The wolf is exceptionally gorgeous!! Thanks
Abe: We had a sustained period of colder-than-usual temperatures and higher-than-usual snowfall so one or both of your assumptions could be the answer.
Buck: Thank you!
Hilda: Keeps things interesting in the village!
Jacob: No, nothing very special about it except that it's the only log house in the village. In general, log houses are not common in these parts.
B Squared: So how much detail can one get with a chainsaw? I guess it depends on the skills of the person operating it.
Lady: Probably depends on the skill of the carver. :-) I would imagine a LONG time... Wolf? I thought they were Mama and Baby Bear.
Fio: Thanks!
JM: There are all sorts of goodies around the house. Not very easy to photograph though.
V: The mail-lady, I believe, and I should think not! ;-)
What a fun and artsy mailbox. I am sure this mailbox is the talk of the town. I am glad you enjoyed the Desert Wildflower Chihuly exhibit on my site. Everybody loves Chihuly. I will keep posting more of Chihuly over time.
I started this blog in Jan 2007 as a member of the City Daily Photo family representing the village of Villigen. I'm a transplant to Switzerland and keeping the blog was a way for me to keep a record of new things I learnt while sharing with others. I was on a long LONG break, and now I post only sporadically although I still have hopes of posting more regularly. Thanks for stopping by and drop me a line if you have questions or comments. Camera and other information at the foot of the page. 20150322

I love what you have been doing with wood. I wish I had your eye!
That's a fascinating log house and the most adorable mailbox!
Intriguing photograph, but I think I've missed something along the way. Does this building have some importance in your community.
Thanks for stopping at Ocala DP!
Some craftsmen here use chainsaws to carve logs. This looks a lot more intricate.

Lovely. Great idea :)
Thank you for stopping by my blog.
Greetings from Poland!
The title says it all. Just wonderful!
Does that scare off the mailman??

I love the way the baby bear is clinging on!

Very nice. Cute little bear!
Thanks for popping by and leaving a comment about the mail boxes in my blog. I thought they are interesting but this one takes the cake!
I love this wood carving.
