Full moon with fog

The moon's orbit around the earth is elliptical and as such there is a point in its cycle where it is closer to the earth than at any other. Last night the closest approach coincided with a full moon, for the first time in 15 years. It was about 30,000 km closer (total distance of 350,000 km). Link to BBC news item.

Quite unexpectedly, we had a clear enough sky to take this photo. Of course, I didn't perceive any difference, given the limitations of our sensors.

Very clear shot, Z, and I like the way you have composed the image. What sort of lens do you have - brandname too please. I am looking for a good zoom over the next little while.

And yesterday,It was the night of the year when the moon was the most clear, wasn'It?
Because the moon was nearest the earth

Virginia and Sharon: Thanks!

Julie: I'm glad you like it! The camera is the same as before (and as on the bottom of my blog page): a Lumix FZ7. I turned off the image stablization and used a tripod and the timer (to minimize camera shake). The photo actually had the moon in the center (I use center-weighted exposure metering) and I cropped it for the post. Like you, I'm also looking for some replacement gear and I was looking at used Nikon D60s and a couple of VR lenses, but have been waiting to see how the story of the new Lumix G1 pans out. The tech-head in me is smitten by the innovations in that camera.

Anon: No worries! Thank you for taking the time to write, and come visit again!

Taa for all that and for your comment. I had been reading earlier this morning about the G1, but like a lot of manufacturers, they seem to lock you in to just them. Makes sense, I guess.

I have been "given" a Canon EOS400D to play with over the summer but the most it comes with is 18-55 and to be able to zoom to something like 250 would be good. I will teach myself how to use it and then see what I find in the New Year sales. I think I will keep with Canon - locked in mentally more than anything else.
