Up on Besserstein
Besserstein is the hill that overlooks Villigen and affords a great view of the surrounding area. I've posted several photos from up there, click on the besserstein label below to see them and other related posts.
It is thought that there was a hideaway at the top in the late-prehistoric times. It is also thought that there was a watchtower built by the Romans, however no actual ruins have been found. What does exist is a pile of rocks as seen here, and a few WWII era bunkers.
Today is Theme Day, the monthly community project of the City Daily Photo group. The theme for October is cemetery and since Villigen doesn't have one, I've decided not to participate but I wanted to allude to the theme. To look through the posts from the rest of the community, visit the Daily City Photo Blog portal.

nice to escape from the theme into the hills!
Is that normal, for a town to not have a cemetery? Is there a neighboring town with one, or do people use private land?
Gerald: Isn't it though?
R&R: Right, the neighboring village of Rein has a church and cemetary. Here's an old post from June showing the steeple from Villigen.
Very peaceful area (not a cemetery but the same peacefulness though!). Nice photo.
I think it would be nice to have a big hill to climb and look down upon the town. Nice photo.
You have too tho photo, which could be taken from my archive :) ( AjaccioDP has second one )
Those warm green and grey colours are so inviting.
