Homes

There have been a handful of new building projects in Villigen and this one is at the edge of the village, just before you get to the PSI. The buildings face-on in the photo probably consist of four separate apartments. The ones perpendicular to them are duplexes. Parking lies underground.

I've been taking photos of the construction process for the past several months, and I've made a collage of some of them from the different projects. View the collage on my overflow site:

I think the interesting thing here is the underground parking. Hugely expensive, and people would say why bother when you are in a wee village, but thanks god, as a photographer, that they do this here. That answers the questions that Chucker and others have asked regarding how it is possible to get photos with no cars in them.

Hallelujah - you get nothing for nothing

Interesting quarter! The underground parking also helps when its freezing outside...
Meanwhile, I just left Bali and posted on Singapore at Blogtrotter.
Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Cars are like people -- a fact of life and part of life. To see scenes without them are rare indeed. Nice photo.

What are the prices of these homes if you buy them?

Richard: Absolutely agree. I didn't want to harp on it, but I had to mention it in my write-up because I really like that they do this here.

GMG: True, having access to the garage in such a way has many advantages.

OMLincoln: Public transportation is very good around here (even in such a village) and I think a lot of people use the busses and trains for commuting purposes even if they have cars. We have a car, but I use public transportation most of the time.

Regarding prices. They're high: CHF 630,000 (USD 450,000 at today's rate) for a 170 m² (1830 ft²) duplex with 330 m² (3550 ft²) piece of land.

It is my understanding that the real estate market here is very stable, with no real excitement either way. Building work is also very expensive, with (in this case) underground parking lots (and nuclear fallout shelters), masonry construction, underfloor radiant heating system and a heat pump.

You know you don't have to harp on about it - I'll do it for you!

I have to disagree with OML - cars are not a fact of life, or don't need to be. With the right circumstances it is quite possible to do without them. I sold my car when I came to Switzerland, and have never missed it. Wen I go back to the UK however... you can't manage without it and it just adds stress and expense to your life. If you have a young family it makes sense, but that doesn't mean it's a necessity for everyobne

They have underground parking for residential homes? How interesting.
