Daily Photo theme day: Street signs
It's the first of the month and time again for the Daily City Photo Theme Day! Street signs and/or street lights are on offer this month. Photographed here is a Wegweiser in Villigen, a signpost showing directions and distances to places for hikers. The distances are actually given in time, as they're supposed to account for changes in terrain (50 km uphill vs 50 km on level ground, that sort of thing). Let's just say it usually takes me a little longer than advertised, and let's blame it on the obsessive photo taking.
Note the lowest marker which says Schweizer Familie Feuerstelle. That's a designated public place for picnics, stocked with firewood and an area to build a fire for grilling. Some of them are even kitted out with picnic tables and benches. For a searchable list by Canton, click here (might be useful for readers in Switzerland). Schweizer Familie is a Swiss magazine and they appear to sponsor these sites.
Back in February, I had posted a photo of the largest example of these that I've come across.
More than 100 daily city bloggers are participating in today's theme day:

Interesting sign; helps if you know the language!!
I remembered the sign from February and thought this was something similar.
Hiking overload! If I was one of them (the hikers, not signs ;-)), which trail would I choose?
Very neat. You've got to get quite close to the signs to be able to read them. I like them a lot.
I love these, great idea.
Info overload!
But I guess when you need it, its good that the signs tell you everything :-)
Happy Theme Day!
This is very different--distances for hikers! What a different world we all live in, eh? Happy Theme Day!
Beautiful photograph. love it.
Happy Theme Day! =)
Nice photo of the group of signs.
I could manage to get simple traffic signs, so posted a collage.
The letterings are pretty small for the street signs. But I guess people stop to read them.
Beautiful concentration of signs.
Nobody can not lose himself !
Familie Feuerstelle is a good idea.
Kate: Isn't that usually the case? :-) Most of the labels are the names of places, so for that, one doesn't need to know German (except for those cases where places have different names in German, French and Italian: Genf, Genève, Ginevra).
Gerald: Good memory!
Isabella: I'd go with Besserstein, the hill that overlooks the village and surrounding area. You get a great view...
Fénix: Since they're for hikers who would walk under them anyway, they're sized appropriately. I think the photo might make them look smaller than in reality.
Sally: Isn't it though?
Keropok: Oh yeah, they are very useful.
Kuanyin: Differences make things interesting, don't they? Thanks for visiting!
Emily: Thanks!
Anu: I've done collages in the past. They're fun.
Ming: They're definitely intended for people on foot who walk up to them to read the signs.
Claude: I like the Feuerstelle idea as well. Haven't used any of the sites yet.
Great picture, and great idea--I don't know how you could decide which one to take, if you were just out for a random stroll. :)
So many different trails, should be difficult to choose one!
Very interesting. I nearly posted one today on the same subject - so helpful to hikers. We have wooden signs for walkers telling them how long it will take them to walk to x y or z.
One of my few memories about signs comes from Switzerland ... My wife and I were driving on a highway and a big green sign with cities and distance appeared. What was unique was the extension on the sign to accommodate the length of city name ... On the hiking. Do you have to complete a form stating your starting and planned exit points? We do this in the US for safety purposes.
Stacks of wood for picnicers???? I fear that in England they would diappear elsewhere rahter fast!
P.S...what's all that"marker stuff" Richard was telling you about? Is he unwell after taking a colour photo?
Michelle and B Orange: Take whichever one you like today, and one of the others next week... :-)
Jilly: Hope to see your photo sometime.
Denton: No, no, no! And "hiking" encompasses all levels. There are the serious hikers with all the gear, but also the casual weekend people like me who don't even necessarily wear boots. The trails (Wanderweg) come in all flavors so everyone can enjoy the great outdoors and the knock-out scenery.
Chuck: Hee! Mark-up, as in HTML. His blog whats-it is/was acting up and when I left a link using HTML tags -left triangular bracket- a href -right triangular bracket- blah blah, it made a mess of it. Would you like me to try to explain further?
A lot of good info here. Sounds like folks like to get outdoors!
How cool...signs in minutes...now that is a new one for me.
That is a lot of signs to figure out where to go!!
