Sodium lamp

While it has never been my intent to bring my personal opinions into this blog, I cannot deny that the results of the recent referendum have affected me. I need some time off to re-evaluate my position in Villigen given that according to the local results, two out of three voters from here would probably be happy to see me move elsewhere.

I'll leave you with a link to this piece by Tariq Ramadam, a Swiss Muslim who is a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at Oxford University:
My compatriots' vote to ban minarets is fuelled by fear

Hi Z

What does an insurance salesman when he wants to sell an insurance. He talks about all the risks, the insured must take if he has no insurance.
Take risks and bear them - all people do in their lives.
To speak of these risks and take advantage of the uncertainty is the insidious variant.
Who sows distrust to its supposed benefits.
If this ideology winns - tho open minded cultre fails.

Hallo Z,

Hello dear Wellingtonia and ilCuoco,

Thank you very much for your thoughtful comments. They mean more to me than you know. I think I may continue with the blog again next year.

ilCuoco, many of your opinions are really not so different from mine. I too don't think it's necessary to have minarets, but it's what's behind the act of putting such a clause in the constitution of Switzerland that scares me.

I rather enjoy personal opinions in a blog, especially from someone as mysterious as a single letter of the alphabet.
The comments made no sense to me, the first is too obscure and the second ( by the teutonic chef)outpaces my school boy German (ein zimmer bitte fur ein nacht is my level).
On the subject of minarets, if the author of the piece you linked to is correct there are but four minarets in Switzerland, with no more to come.
It seems to me Muslims have done a singularly bad job of managing their affairs in Europe. The business of the death threats against Rushdie, the murder of the Dutch artists, the row over the Danish cartoons and on and on and on, have all led to a reaction by Europeans. How the reaction is managed will be the measure of the civility of both sides.
Good luck. Keep it personal, it makes it more interesting.

Conch:

The Ramadan article is (mostly) correct. There had been a new proposal submitted to the building commission of a town called Langenthal. As I understand it, that was one of the things that spurred along this initiative.

The act of attributing the actions of a few to the group at large is a common one. I'm reminded of an American friend who lived in Germany for a while -- he was apparently often asked to explain the actions of the Bush/Cheney regime. Except, I (and many like me) have made no "contract" of support to extremists who claim to speak on my (our) behalf.

It's a mess and everyone gets more and more polarised making it even messier. We have to just keep on keeping on.
When I was traveling in Bosnia I found it handy to be able to spot Catholic crosses (Croats) Orthodox crosses (Serbs) and minarets (Muslims)to try to compose myself and not cause chaos and offense as is my wont. Perhaps we will get to see the same in Switzerland? Whose canton goes Muslim first? One of those unpronounceable mountain fastnesses where the fashionable going skiing perhaps.

@Conch

Hi
Uncertainty is the intention.
Are you a member of the advertising industry or a consumer?
Profit is the goal.
Are you a winner or a consumer?
In most cases you yourself can decide on which side you go!
