Where the Aare begins

I've written often about the Aare as it flows near Villigen, on its way out of Switzerland. But this is the region where it begins, near the Grimsel Pass at the border of cantons Valais/Wallis and Bern. Over the next few days, I'll show some photos I took in that area.

Something about this photo has an old-time postcard feel about it. Very nice. You may be pleased to know that the Aare is often used in American crossword puzzles. The puzzle writers love all those vowels.

It looks so bare and treeless here. Where is Heidi and her cows.

Joan: I agree!

Antjas: I didn't know that about the crosswords. Thanks for enlightening me!

Arabesque: Sadly, I don't actually have any photos of the glacier that feeds the Aare.

Leif: Lovely, though hard as AB says.

AB: Things get rough at altitudes of 2000m above sea level here. I think upto 1600m there can be summer meadows (depending on region). The story of Heidi is set around Maienfeld in canton Graubünden. If I've got this right, the village is around 650m. The enterprising Swiss have been exploiting that region for tourism. "Heidiland" is very popular with a lot of foreigners/tourists.
