I took almost the same photo this past week! We have that same tree/shrub in Alabama. :)

This plant was all over the Langedoc when I was there during October. Some were an orange and some were closer to crimson. I know there here in Australia as cotoneaster (cotone-aster) however, I note Wiki says that there is also a serrated edge leaf that has thorns which is what you have identified.
