Hiltl in Zürich

Hiltl is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Europe, dating back to 1898. I like them a lot and am always happy to recommend them and their offshoot, Tibits. I enjoy their smart advertising campaign, and recently they made clear their position on the far right political group SVP (I've mentioned them a few times recently). There's a photo on my overflow site of the postcard.

If you're a dedicated meat eater, would you try Hiltl once?

The photo turned out poorly, and I resorted to Photoshop chicanery to make it more interesting.

Richard will be very proud of you.

Does this mean all of HIS photos are in fact poor?

That postcard is fabulous. One of my daughters is an avowed vegeterian and thinks we should all be forced to give up killing and eating animals.

Flat-out different: Brookville, Ohio 45309

'roony: I hope so, and um?!

OML: There are many reasons to choose a vegetarian diet. I'm not vegetarian myself, though I aspire to it. Have a long way to go.

Here's a very strong comment at the Guardian (UK) on how an animal-intensive diet is not globally sustainable:
Why vegans were right all along.

Me too - I'm in Tibits most every morning. Haven't been in the new Hiltl since it re-opened. You're right about their advertising campaigns - very neat. NB did you get any photos of the ads they used in the run up to the reopening? Photos of people with their noses pressed up against the glass, making them look like porkers?

(NB I posted this also on the overflow site by mistake)

I'm semi vegetarian for purely egoistical purposes. Veggies are delicious and they do my health a lot of good. Killing and eating animals is perfectly ethical and globally sustainable as far as I'm concerned. What's not ethical and not sustainable is our twisted food industry which, of course, is the only choice for most of us without a farm of our own.

This restaurant sign turned out very well. I believe I'd try eating there without any hesitation although I do enjoy certain cuts of meat, properly prepared.

As for the sign you gave me to the link to visit, I knew immediately that it was a gramaphone-type disc. I've seen such at the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I don't know the actual size, though, so I cannot help you with knowing if the one over the store is real or made to order for the sign.
