Schifflände from across the Aare

A follow-up on yesterday's post. By the time I got around to taking this photo yesterday afternoon, the high waters had receeded quite a bit. However, some trees that are normally not submerged are still in the water, and the water is a lot muddier than usual.

For a look at the restaurant and how it's oriented with respect to the hill, Besserstein, in Villigen, visit my overflow blog:

I've seen "Schifflände" used all over the place in Switzerland and had always assumed it had something to do with jetty or just "where boats are". Sticking it in Leo (www.leo.org) it confirms it's a Swiss/Austrian word and the English translation is "hythe" - which I had to look up. It's an Old English or Saxon word for "port". Should have realised from Hythe in Kent. I think the Swiss meaning is less grand than port - jetty maybe. Anyway, the restaurant looks a nice place to sit out on the terrace, looks safe enough even though the Aare has been a bit trubulent recently as you say

In the photo on your overflow site, I can see a teeny, tiny car and it reminded me of another of your posts in your overflow site from 27May.
I believe teeny tiny cars are the norm in Europe?
Here (Australia) everyone seems to be obsessed with 4WD recreation vehicles.
I prefer your teeny tiny cars!

Richard: Interesting background on the words and their connections. I always parsed the word as "ship landing", which I guess was close enough for government work, as they say (at least in the US). There used to be a rather important ferry crossing over the Aare at Stilli (Stilli is an old settlement). I'm still trying to get the story sorted out for a post I have in mind.

Freefalling: Yes, that's a Smart (one of my favorites), a similar one of which can be seen in my 20070422 post. There are certainly lots of small cars here, but there are also some SUVs and big things like BMWs and Mercedes Benzes.

Portent in this river shot....Quiet idylic Stilli and the turbulent rain swollen Aare...times change. I've no problems with your wicked comment about looting over on R u T. It happened, but the universe is a balanced thing and what comes out also goes in. We all have to put up with "invasions" and there are plenty of examples of benefits.

I'm psd to see you are cooking up a series on the landing stages and "hythes" - (Richard really overdosed on that one ;-))

I am sorry some are suffering from floods while we are dry -- a three month drought. It is a crazy year for weather everywhere.

Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting there. I appreciate it so much.

I am also working on Features about why people comment on some posts and not others. You might find that interesting when it is done.

@chuckeroon - yeah, I'm always impressed with z's research skills and accuracy - so I try and emulate, normally failing miserably

Richard: Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I fear I've now been set up for failure!
