Cherries!

Cherries have been ripening around the region and they're on the market now. Our local produce stand has had some, and I bought 2 kilos of them on a whim. Cherry pie recipes, anyone?

Most of the cherries you see around here, in fact almost all, are just for eating. I've been told that you can buy pie cherries directly from orchards though.

The problem with using the sweet cherries for pie is that you end up with a pie with no tartness at all. It only ends up tasting like sugar. I learned this from a friend who used to work summers on an orchard in eastern WA when he was growing up.

Greg: good to know, so that I don't waste the precious stuff. I think I'm going to mix them into chocolate ice cream. In Maryland, there were ice cream parlors where you could get all sorts of fruits and candies "kneaded" into your ice cream on a cold marble slab, and then put into a cone or a dish. Haven't seen that here, and I don't even know how to refer to it.

Karola&Pamp: Welcome to Villigen and thank you for your comment!

I love cherries. Are these sweet or sour? Mine are sour and good only for pies but now the tree has been dying and the birds eat the few cherries left.

I am afraid these would never get to the pie at my house...I love fresh cherries.

You are very lucky. Here the season is almost over and price is cheapper. Last friday I could buy one kilo for 6,50 euros but them are not very nice. We shall wait for the next year in hoping our tree will be more generousthan this year.

JB of Mainz DP has cherries featured today, too. His look like the tart variety. Either way, cherries are a seasonal favorite--worldwide, I think!

Abraham: These cherries are sweet, I think. I didn't actually pick any, so I don't know. I just bought ones that were already picked and weighed.

Lavender Lady, Barb and Kate: The cherries I bought are very good. I've been eating them, though apparently not fast enough as some of them are spoiling.

Claude: There are only a few things that are cheaper in CH as far as I can tell, judging by what all the people I know tell me. Cherries seem to be one of them, hurrah for me! The ones I bought at our local stand were CHF 6 (under 4 Euro) per kilo. I hope your tree does better next year.

Thanks for visiting. And thanks to the ever-alert Kate for directing you over.
You're right - they're just irresistible. I'll probably get vitamin poisoning at this rate...
