The SLS viewed through a field of corn

I seldom mention it, but Villigen is home to Switzerland's largest national research facility. It is called the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) and there are almost two thousand people who work there.

Here, the SLS (Swiss Light Source — click here —) building rises above a field of corn.

Photographing the photographer

I took this photograph in March in Brugg.

Hay bales being wrapped

At the left edge of the photo is the truck with the hay. The machinery in the middle (with the rolls of plastic film on the top) forms the bales and then wraps them. The tractor on the right moves the finished bales around.

Hay bales on a truck

It's that time of the year. Hay is being collected and stored for the winter. Tomorrow I'll show you how cylindrical bales are wrapped.

Cat on a vineyard slope

I know you can't see the vineyard from here, but I'm calling it this way anyway. This house has appeared many times on the blog as it's across from the bus stop and I'm there a lot.

Apples

There are lots of apple and some pear trees around the village.

Villigen Vor Tor

There are two bus stops in Villigen. This is the one I haven't shown before.

Curve in the railway tracks

A view of how the railway lines curve into the Brugg main station. Following the tracks to the top of the image will get you to Baden and beyond.

Dahlias on Hauptstrasse

Another view from the area of the banana trees I showed a couple of days ago. The furniture shop in the back is the one that this old photo (20090813 Möbel Ausstellung) referred to.

Sign of the season

One of the (unfortunate) hallmarks of this area is the morning fog in the winter. Apparently it is related to the proximity of the Wasserschloss — the confluence of the rivers Aare, Reuss and Limmat — which dumps a lot of water into the region.

Banana trees on Hauptstrasse

More Key West than Villigen, but there you have it. And this is not an isolated case, there are several around the village. Of course, they don't actually produce bananas in this climate.

The turning

The leaves on a dwarf grape plant that I have on the balcony turned color a couple of days ago.

Tabby, looking for a friend

I was afraid to pet this extremely chatty and friendly cat, lest he followed me home. Though in this photo he looks a little cross.

Villigen fire hydrant no. 92

Careening from one extreme to the other (referring to the posts from the last three days). This sleek worm-like model was installed last year across from the Villigen post office.

I confess that if were asked which one I would like in front of my house, I might choose this one. Are you all disappointed?

My apologies to those of you bored with this thing.

Detail fire hydrant II

Following up on yesterday's post, here's a bigger picture. I seem to have found a hydrant with a crooked cap. As for the material, it's some type of metal.

Detail on an old fire hydrant in Brugg. They don't make them like this anymore.

Wisteria, again

This photo is from Brugg this spring. The fall blooms aren't quite as full — although the foliage is thicker — as far as I've noticed so far.
