Five llamas under the hill

Classic Villigen?! The llamas were out in fine form on Sunday, and were curious to see what we were up to, as much as we were curious to see them.

Insider: I'm sorry we missed you. I wasn't sure where to look for you.

The mill seen from the bridge

If you look to the left of the wood bridge in yesterday's post, you'll see this building. The Gipsmühle, as far as I've been able to determine. I don't know what it was they milled here, but there are many such mills all along the rivers.

The Limmat flowing into the Aare

The Limmat is in the background and the Aare at the front. There's a weir near the far bank if you look closely. There are many small power generating stations all along these rivers and this is one of them.

I made a movie of this area to try to convey how the currents flow as the rivers merge. About 52 seconds long.

High water mark

This big flood occured before my time in Switzerland. I took this photo in Lauffohr (click on label below for related posts) near Brugg, where the Limmat flows into the Aare. The region is called the/das Wasserschloss and is the confluence of the Limmat, the Aare and the Reuss.

Someone please tell me what bird this is

Updated: It's a (European) magpie (thanks Gwyn!)

Here's looking at you... I think

I find these black llamas so difficult to photograph.

Update: This fellow is called Zorro, according to a local reader of the blog.

Harbinger

We had quite a few days of spring-like weather, but then since yesterday it has cooled off significantly.

Car sharing

Car sharing is useful for people who need a car only once in a while to get somewhere that has limited or inconvenient access through public transportation. Brugg is our main major pick-up and drop-off point. Villigen is too small to have a Mobility station, but the PSI (a national research facility, mentioned a few times before) has sufficient employees to merit one there. On this day, there were three cars available, this one a gas-electric Toyota Prius hydrid. Members of the service (page in English even, although the third and fourth languages listed on the decal, namely Italian and Rumantsch are not represented) can pre-arrange a car either by phone or internet.

Do you live in a place with a similar system? Do you use it?

Elvis?!

Maybe it's just the upturned collar, but for some reason, this guy made me think of Elvis. And on this note, we end the 2008 Brugg Fasnacht posts.

Brugg Fasnacht parade 2008

I thought I had missed the Brugg Fasnacht parade but I was wrong. Here is the Villigen group putting in an appearance this afternoon. More photos from the parade will show up over the course of the week.

I've decided to make a series of this, house names from the Brugg Altstadt. Here is one dedicated to St. Fridolin.

Despite my intentions, I've been unable to come by and comment on your blogs, although I do keep up with many through Google Reader. In a few days, I think...

And so it starts

Fasnacht (Lenten) celebrations are starting up. The flag of the Baden Fasnacht guild is once again flying over the Habsburg ruin in Baden. Last year's post is here.
