Seen on scaffolding that's put up to show the outlines of buildings that are to be constructed. It's a part of the process to get a building permit.

Modern in Villigen

The concrete block house is what I call it. It appeals to me. The bee house is next door.

And because today is the one-year anniversary of this blog, I give you this:

:-) I thank you for your visits and comments. It has been a truly wonderful experience to "meet" you and to share Villigen with you all.

For the sake of the truth

There's modern that I like, there's modern that I don't like but can appreciate, and then there's the third category. Neumarkt Brugg has been going strong since 1975.

By the way, for another view of the building in yesterday's post, see my overflow site:

Birdhouse 84

There are lots of birdhouses on trees in the vicinity of the Aare in Brugg. I stumbled upon a cluster of them near the old town today. Here's number 84.

I've recently started to read a book called Das Wasserschloss, about this general area where the three rivers, the Aare, the Reuss and the Limmat come together. Brugg is the entry point of the Aare to the confluence, while Villigen/Stilli is roughly the exit point. I'll try to do some posts based on what I read.

The fronts of the houses

An overexposed photo, but it'll have to do. These are the fronts of some of the buildings in yesterday's image. I think they're mixed-use for the most part, with businesses downstairs and apartments upstairs. Römerturm, on the right, is a restaurant.

An aside: For the longest time, like many others, I wondered why '4' was written as IIII on most clock faces rather than as IV. Now with the WWW and search engines, I've found this page which provides a lot of information, if not a simple answer:
To IV, or not to IV

The Aare in Brugg II

Yet another shot of the river -- rather the bank of the river -- taken from the old bridge in Brugg. These houses in the Altstadt (old town) are built directly at the edge, on the limestone gorge (for want of a better word) walls. There's no clear access to the water that I can see, so I wonder why they weren't built a little further away.

Compensated mangoes

In the little section of the Blogosphere that I frequent, awareness of the impact on the environment of people's activities and choices seems to rather high. I've been trying to reduce my own impact (trying being the operative word here), at least educate myself about the sources of the food I eat, and things I buy. The labelling in Switzerland is very helpful in this regard -- though I have found mistakes occasionally -- and recently I started noticing these airplane symbols on some of the products at the Coop supermarkets. They've established a foundation (claimed to be the first one in CH) with CHF 1.5 million (about USD 1.4 million at today's rate) to offset the carbon dioxide emissions caused by such things as company employees' business travel, home delivery service operations and the transport of foodstuffs. Link to their website (in German).
